Leader of Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School, Panji Gumilang, Refuses to Meet MUI Investigation Team
Jakarta – The leader of the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School, Panji Gumilang, has refused to meet with the Ma’had Research Team of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). The MUI was present at Gedung Sate Bandung when the West Java Provincial Government investigation team attempted to meet with Panji Gumilang.
Firdaus Syam, the head of the Ma’had Research Team, expressed his disappointment with Panji Gumilang’s refusal to meet with the team from the Central MUI. According to Firdaus, Panji Gumilang only wanted to meet with the investigation team formed by the West Java Provincial Government.
“We at the MUI express our deep regret that Panji Gumilang is not willing to meet with or avoid the MUI. We know that the MUI is an institution that is not only legal but also recognized by the state,” Firdaus said.
This is not the first time that Panji Gumilang has refused to meet with the Central MUI. He also refused to directly answer questions from the West Java Provincial Government investigation team regarding the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School.
“We went to Indramayu yesterday to be able to meet, but there was no response. We sent a letter a few days ago, and until now, there has been no meeting for tabayun (clarification), and today we came from Jakarta and were also rejected,” Firdaus added.
The MUI plays a crucial role in ensuring the adherence to Islamic teachings and principles in Indonesia. The refusal of Panji Gumilang to meet with the MUI raises concerns about transparency and cooperation in addressing the issues surrounding the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School.

What steps can be taken by the West Java Provincial Government to hold Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School accountable if the investigation reveals evidence of radical teachings or extremist ideologies
Milang’s refusal to meet. He stated that they were simply trying to conduct an investigation and gather information regarding the school’s curriculum and activities. The MUI is responsible for ensuring that Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia follow proper guidelines and promote a balanced understanding of the religion.
Gumilang, however, defended his decision, stating that he did not see the need to meet with the MUI. He claimed that Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School has always been open and transparent, and their curriculum is in line with national standards. Gumilang asserted that their teachings promote tolerance, peace, and respect for diversity.
This refusal by Al-Zaytun’s leader comes amidst a wider investigation into the school following allegations of radical teachings and extremist ideologies being propagated within its walls. Earlier this year, a video of a student from Al-Zaytun went viral, in which he was seen praising the Islamic State and expressing support for extremist acts.
The West Java Provincial Government formed an investigation team, including representatives from the MUI, to look into the school’s operations. They aim to ensure that the school is not involved in any activities that go against the nation’s principles of religious harmony and tolerance.
Despite the refusal to meet, the investigation team will continue their inquiry into Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School. They will interview staff, students, and other relevant parties to gather information about the allegations being made. The findings will then be presented to the West Java Provincial Government for further action.
It is crucial for all educational institutions, especially those with religious affiliations, to adhere to national guidelines and promote values of peace, tolerance, and respect. Any school found promoting radical ideologies or engaging in activities that harm the nation’s unity and harmony must be held accountable.
The refusal of Al-Zaytun’s leader to meet with the MUI investigation team only raises more questions and suspicions about the school’s practices. Transparency and cooperation in such matters are necessary to address concerns and prevent the spread of radical ideologies among the youth.
It is disappointing that Panji Gumilang refuses to meet with MUI. This decision undermines the transparency and accountability that the West Java Government investigation team aims to achieve.
It’s disheartening to see Panji Gumilang’s refusal to cooperate with MUI. It raises concerns about his willingness to address the allegations against him.
