Panic in a university in Canada. Wounded, shot and arrested at gunpoint

Four people were injured in a shooting on Friday near a university in Montreal and were taken to hospital, according to a police source.

Police arrested a gunman at an educational institution in the Montreal area and some students were forced to barricade themselves at the request of the police during their intervention.

At 5:30 pm local time (22:30 GMT), police spokeswoman Genevieve Major told AFP, shots were heard in a park across from Montmorency University in the Montreal suburb of Laval.

Four people who were shot took refuge in the college and were later taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The university, which has about 10,000 students and teachers, remained closed in the evening, while the police launched a manhunt in search of the killer.

Mayor Stephane Boyer said on his Twitter account that a police operation was “underway”.

Earlier, a 19-year-old man wearing a bulletproof vest was arrested at a university 40km south of Montreal on charges of making threats.

Students and staff told local media that they were ordered to barricade themselves in lines and turn off their lights for most of the day as a police operation went on outside.

Quebec’s public safety minister François Bonardelle wrote on Twitter that the students at the institute “faced a difficult situation today.”

He added, “I feel relieved by the turn of events.”

In a video on Twitter, a mother explained to one of the students that her son was inside the school and was very afraid for him.
