Panic among expectant mothers and fathers: it can sometimes be difficult to treat rusks with mice. Due to delivery problems, the pink, blue and stamped mice are missing from the supermarket shelves.
Kraft Heinz, the company behind the famous De Ruijter mice, says that the shortages are due to interruptions in the supply chain in recent times.
“We are already at full production capacity in our factory in Utrecht. We expect that the distribution centers of supermarkets and other businesses will soon be supplied with the product,” says a spokesperson.
The white and pink mice have been produced by De Ruijter since 1860. These are anise seeds with layers of sugar around them. It was only after the birth of Princess Beatrix in 1938 that serving rusks with mice at a birth really became a national tradition.
In the beginning, pink and white mice were served for both the birth of a boy and a girl. Since 1994 it has been customary to serve blue mice at the birth of a boy.
