On Wednesday, the World Health Organization classified the outbreak of the corona pathogen as a pandemic. By definition, a pandemic is a worldwide disease outbreak. Diseases of Covid-19 have already been recorded in 114 countries. Around 120,000 people have been infected.

“We are deeply concerned about both the alarming levels of spread and severity and the alarming levels of inactivity,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. However, the new description does not change the organization’s measures.

“No need to worry and fear more”

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the classification as a pandemic has no direct impact on the measures in Germany. “There is no reason to be more worried and scared now,” said RKI Vice President Lars Schaade in Berlin on Thursday.

However, it is still important to take the situation seriously and to show personal responsibility for stopping the spread of the coronavirus. With a view to the currently quite rapid increase in the number of infections in Germany, the RKI vice-president said that the coming days and weeks would show whether the various measures could “flatten the curve”.
