It is not because we talk less about the Covid-19 that it has disappeared. The pandemic is certainly on the decline in the canton, but the virus is still circulating in Geneva: the positivity rate of screening tests remains high, “which means significant viral circulation within the population”, indicates the service of the cantonal doctor. (SMC) in its weekly report
The decrease in the number of cases, as well as the other indicators, continues, even if it is experiencing a slight slowdown. “After a sharp decrease in recent weeks, the number of acute infections seems to be stabilizing, confirms the SMC. However, this trend remains to be confirmed due to the recent lifting of numerous measures. There are 250 to 400 new cases per day, compared to 400 to 600 the previous week.
Omicron and other variants
The Omicron variant continues to represent almost all infections (more than 95%) with a clear increase in the BA.2 sub-variant, without this leading to a change in the cantonal strategy. France announces that it has detected the existence of co-infections, either patients simultaneously infected with two variants, and recombinants, or an infection by a recombination of variants, for example a “deltacron”.
What about Geneva? Pauline Vetter, from the Infectious Diseases Department of the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) confirms that co-infections and recombinants exist between Delta and Omicron, and between Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 in the world but these cases remain for the instant rare and difficult to detect. “In Geneva, we were able to see, in periods of peak contamination, co-infections from time to time, in a rare way, she specifies. To our knowledge, there is no recombinant confirmation at the moment in Geneva.”
Hospitalization in decline
The number of hospitalizations also continues to decline. The SMC notes that “the peak has been reached and the load should continue to decrease”. Some 62 people are hospitalized for an acute Covid, including 13 in intensive care compared to 20 last week. There are 381 post-Covid patients. “The incidence of hospitalization is five times higher for the non-vaccinated”, specifies the SMC. Note that since 1 is March, there were no Covid-related deaths. During the month of February, 29 deaths were recorded.
The SMC also recalls that “if we are all impatient to move on, it is always necessary to keep a few reflexes: ventilation, washing of hands and surfaces, testing oneself in the event of symptoms”.
