Pandemic kills more than 313,000 and infects nearly 4.7 million worldwide

Among the countries hardest hit is Belgium, which has the highest proportion of deaths in relation to its total population, with 78 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Spain (59), Italy (53), United Kingdom (51) and France (43).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macau), where the pandemic began in late December, officially accounts for a total of 82,947 cases (six new ones infected since Saturday), including 4,634 deaths (one new) and 78,227 cured.

Nepal and Madagascar have announced, in the last 24 hours, the first deaths linked to the new coronavirus in their territories.

In Portugal and according to the Directorate-General for Health, the number of deaths today reached 1,218, 15 more than on Saturday, and 29,036 infected, 226 more cases.

Europe today totaled 166,647 deaths in 1,890,453 cases at 20:00 in Lisbon, the United States of America and Canada 95,077 deaths (in 1,555,185 cases), Latin America and the Caribbean 28,715 deaths (in 508,623 cases) , Asia 12,176 deaths (in 355,378 cases), the Middle East 8,135 deaths (in 279,994 cases), Africa 2,735 deaths (in 82,684 cases) and Oceania 126 deaths (in 8,391 cases).

AFP’s accounting was done using data provided by the competent national authorities and the World Health Organization to the French news agency’s delegations.

The agency warns that the figures for the evolution of deaths and infections by covid-19 in the last 24 hours may not correspond exactly to those published the previous day due to corrections made by the authorities or the late publication of data.

In addition, the AFP says, the number of diagnosed cases reflects only a fraction of the actual number of infections, since a large number of countries test only those cases that require hospital treatment.
