In UNICEF’s 75 years of existence, no crisis has hit children as hard as the corona pandemic. The organization writes that a report. The number of children living in poverty has increased by about 100 million in less than two years, according to the aid agency. That is a 10 percent increase since 2019.
UNICEF warns that in the most positive scenario, it will take seven to eight years for the number of children living in poverty to return to pre-pandemic levels. Without intervention, according to the NGO, there is a risk of a lost decade for children.
The aid organization also reflects on the blow that the corona crisis was for education. At the peak of the pandemic, more than 1.6 billion children (90 percent of students) worldwide were out of school due to school closures, according to UNICEF.
The report also indicates that some 50 million children currently suffer from acute malnutrition. UNICEF warns that the pandemic could add another 9 million next year.
