TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The global research institute Gartner records throughout 2020 total shipments of personal computers (PC) worldwide reaching 275 million units. This figure is up 4.8 percent when compared to 2019, and is the highest annual growth in a decade.
Gartner said the growth in the total number of PCs being traded was driven by the imposition of social distancing to contain the spread of Covid-19 in almost every country. The policy has contributed to an increase in consumer demand for personal computers.
Specifically, as of the fourth quarter of 2020, PC shipments worldwide reached 79.4 million units. This figure jumped 10.7 percent year on year.
As for global PC manufacturers Lenovo The Group led PC shipments over the past year, shipping 72.7 million units. The number is up 12% year on year, said a report from global market research firm International Data Corporation. HP and Dell were ranked second and third.
The Covid-19 pandemic has an impact on increasing PC use, starting from the increasing number of people work from home, students learning from a distance, which ultimately drives increased consumer demand. The pandemic also not only fueled the demand for the PC market, but also created opportunities that resulted in market expansion.
Although PC business spending remained weak in the fourth quarter of 2020, it is in some regions such as China where the economy has started to recover. The reason is that the decline in the number of Covid-19 cases, according to Gartner, encourages business growth to be a little stronger.
Furthermore, Gartner predicts the growth momentum of PC shipments will continue until at least the first half of 2021. This prediction assumes that changes in people’s daily lives such as online education and working remotely continue in the post-pandemic era.
