Pandemic far from over: worldwide record of new infections

The United States is leader in absolute numbers. Almost two million infections and 110,000 deaths were reported there. But the spread in that country is now slower than before.

More than malaria

More than 400,000 people worldwide have now died of Covid-19. For comparison: that is just as much at the moment as there is people die of malaria in a whole year. Malaria – an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes – is normally one of the deadliest diseases in the world.

The actual death toll from Covid-19 is higher. Many victims have never been tested. In addition, some countries do not include deaths outside hospitals.

Relaxation in India

One of the fastest growing sources of infection in the world is India. A lockdown has been in place since March, but despite the virus outbreak, measures will be further relaxed tomorrow. Now India has nearly 250,000 infections. Only the US, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom have more patients.

President Modi of India wants to restart the economy. Millions of workers have been out of work since the lockdown. Shopping malls, restaurants and places of worship may open again tomorrow. There is some debate about the usefulness of opening places of worship. In any case, believers should wash their hands and feet. Also, no food is distributed and believers are not allowed to touch the sacred objects in temples.

The World Health Organization says the lockdown in India has helped tame the outbreak, yet there is a risk. “When India and other major countries open up again and people start traveling around again, there is always a risk that the disease will reappear,” said Mike Ryan of the WHO.

Infestation Brazil

Brazil is the main source of infection in Latin America. The country has over 670,000 infections and nearly 36,000 deaths. Brazil recorded the most new infections and deaths in the world on four different days last week. Figures are growing fast, now only the US and Great Britain have an even higher official death toll.

Nevertheless, President Bolsonaro would prefer to lift the corona measures as soon as possible. According to him, the economic damage is greater than the risk to public health. The measures have left many Brazilians out of work, and poverty and hunger are also growing as a result.

Censorship

The alarming numbers have been harder to follow for Brazilians since yesterday. Data about the virus has been largely removed from the government website. President Bolsonaro calls the figures misleading.

The only thing the Brazilians still hear are the daily number of new infections, killing and healing people. But those figures are now published after the best viewed news program. “That’s what the story is all about Jornal NacionalBolsonaro joked. According to the president, the news program likes to say that Brazil has another record for the daily number of virus deaths.
