The tri-state area will soon be hit by cold temperatures and the first snowflakes of the season in the northern regions, which can be dangerous especially for the elderly, homeless and families without heating in their homes.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that, on average, at least 1,000 people die each year from hypothermia.
Warming centers are public places that offer shelter from the cold to the most vulnerable residents.
The states of New Jersey and New York activate Code Blue when temperatures drop to or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., according to estimates from the National Weather Service.
