“A rare blood type is a gift from God. I want to help more people who need them, ”says 31-year-old Hou Xiaoke proudly. Your blood type is O negative.

Rhesus negative blood groups are known as “panda blood” in China. Only about 0.3 percent of Han Chinese have a negative blood type. In 2002, an aid organization for rhesus negative blood donors was founded: The loving family with rare blood Wuhan. In the beginning the organization had only 54 members, now there are over 2,000. “We are always there when someone needs us,” explains Shen Jian, who is in charge of the organization.

Before 2016, Hou Xiaoke didn’t even know that she had a rare blood type. On her 25th birthday, she wanted to do something useful and decided to donate blood. She was told that her blood type O was negative. In the past five years she has donated blood a total of 26 times. She even got the call from a hospital once over lunch and immediately took a taxi there to rescue a patient. Her colleagues then nicknamed her the “living blood bank”. The 31-year-old says: “Since then I have known that I always have to be ready to help other people. That’s why I give up some bad habits like unhealthy food or going to bed late. Only when I am healthy are those who receive my blood also healthy. “

Chen Junyu is from Sichuan Province in western China and studied in Wuhan. The 21-year-old explains: “It was a coincidence. When I came to the university four years ago, the university organized blood donations. Since then I have known that I have a rare blood type. The feeling at the time was very strange. On the one hand I found myself very special, but on the other hand I was also very worried about myself. Since I joined ‘The Loving Family with Rare Blood Wuhan’, I have met more people like me. “

According to statistics, members of the organization saved a total of more than 2,000 patients from 2019 to 2021.
