Pancreatic Cancer: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment at SANADOR Oncological Center

Abdominal pain, loss of appetite, unexplained fatigue and jaundice (yellow coloring of the skin and mucous membranes) can be signs and symptoms of a rare condition, but with a reserved prognosis – pancreatic cancer. Since this type of cancer, more common in the elderly, causes such signs and symptoms only when the disease is advanced, it is often discovered by chance during an imaging investigation indicated for another condition.

Even though it is an aggressive type of cancer, this condition can benefit from modern, effective treatment to relieve symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life. In order to obtain the best results, it is important that the patient goes to a top oncology center equipped with the latest technology for a definitive diagnosis and treatment.

In case of suspicion of pancreatic cancer, the doctor will recommend a series of analyzes and investigations to establish the precise diagnosis. Thus, he can request a CT or MRI examination, which allows visualization of the internal organs. The most useful investigation, however, is echoendoscopy, a type of digestive endoscopy which allows an ultrasound to be performed inside the digestive tract, so that the doctor can observe in detail the appearance of the pancreas.

During the echoendoscopy, the specialist can also perform a biopsy, i.e. take a fragment of the suspicious tissue, for a histopathological and immunohistochemical examination in the laboratory. After establishing the diagnosis of certainty, the oncologist or the multidisciplinary oncological committee that analyzes the patient’s case will determine which is the most appropriate therapeutic strategy.

Pancreatic cancer treatment must be personalized and multimodal for the best results. Thus, the patient may be recommended surgery for resection of the pancreas, followed by treatment with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immunotherapy. These oncological treatments are aimed at destroying the tumor cells left after the operation, preventing the occurrence of metastases or eliminating them, if they have already formed.

At the SANADOR Oncological Center, patients have access to the best imaging and laboratory investigations, for the fast and accurate diagnosis of pancreatic cancer – MRI with 3 Tesla power, the latest generation Siemens Definition Edge 128 slice computer tomograph and PET-CT equipment Siemens Biograph Horizon-3R, unique in Romania. Also, patients can perform echoendoscopy, followed by pancreatic biopsy, in the best conditions of safety and comfort.

The surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer is provided at the SANADOR Clinical Hospital by surgeons with long experience in complex hepato-bilio-pancreatic surgery interventions, and at the SANADOR Oncological Center patients benefit from access to the Tumor Board (Multidisciplinary Oncological Commission) and to all procedures of treatment available, depending on the established medical indication.
