Abdominal pain, loss of appetite, unexplained fatigue and jaundice (yellow coloring of the skin and mucous membranes) can be signs and symptoms of a rare condition, but with a reserved prognosis – pancreatic cancer. Since this type of cancer, more common in the elderly, causes such signs and symptoms only when the disease is advanced, it is often discovered by chance during an imaging investigation indicated for another condition.
Even though it is an aggressive type of cancer, this condition can benefit from modern, effective treatment to relieve symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life. In order to obtain the best results, it is important that the patient goes to a top oncology center equipped with the latest technology for a definitive diagnosis and treatment.
In case of suspicion of pancreatic cancer, the doctor will recommend a series of analyzes and investigations to establish the precise diagnosis. Thus, he can request a CT or MRI examination, which allows visualization of the internal organs. The most useful investigation, however, is echoendoscopy, a type of digestive endoscopy which allows an ultrasound to be performed inside the digestive tract, so that the doctor can observe in detail the appearance of the pancreas.
