The pink card ended up in “red and white” hands in the third derby of the year: Panathinaikos-Olympiakos 89-94, after 40 minutes of space basketball at OAKA and with Evan Fournier as the hero. At halftime, the score was 33-41.
The match was part of the 8th matchday of the Euroleague and took place in front of 18,000 fans at the packed OAKA.
Olympiacos entered the field decisively and gained a double-digit lead at the start: 1-11 with Fournier, Vezenkov and later 15-27 with Milutinov leading the way and 25-38 with three-pointers by Williams-Goss. Kostas Slukas cut it to 33-38 with a long shot and Matias Lessor nailed the ball three times to get the “cloverleaf” within shooting distance: 49-50 with a 3-pointer by Hernangometh.
The match became a thriller. Olympiacos responded with composure and won 51-57 and 64-71, in a quarter where amazing basketball was played with amazing accuracy rates. Osman put Panathinaikos back in the game (69-71), but the action of the amazing Milutinov gave the “red and whites” a breather: 71-79. But the derby was not decided.
Jerian Grant cut it to 79-81 midway through the fourth period and the home team went ahead for the first time with Sluka’s shots 3:15 before the final (83-82). Evan Fournier answered with two difficult shots, McKissick wrote 85-89 in the surprise and the unstoppable Fournier finished the match with another three-pointer.
Fournier led the way for the winners with 22 points, 5/10 2-pointers and 4/6 3-pointers. Sasha Vezenkov added 20 points and Nikola Milutinov 12 with 8 rebounds. Nigel Williams-Goss added 13, while Thomas Walkup dished out 11 assists without scoring. Giorgos Bartzokas also used Vildosa 8, Dorsey, McKissick 8, Papanikolaou 3, Peters 4, Fall 4, Wright.
Kendrick Nunn scored 20 points for Panathinaikos, while Lessor, Hernangometh added 13 each, Sloukas 12 and Osman 11. Ergin Ataman also used Brown, Grant 6, Kalaitzakis 2, Papapetrou 3, Mitoglou 5, Yurtseven 4. The injured person was absent Grigonis, who will return to action in 1.5 months.
Panathinaikos had defeated Olympiakos away in the recent Basket League derby, but the “red and white” won the first “eternal” derby of the year in the Super Cup final in Rhodes.
Olympiacos improved to 5-3 with its third consecutive European victory and is now level with the “greens”. Zalgiris, Bayern and Barcelona share the top spot with a 6-2 record. Last year’s finalists Real fell to 3-5.
Next Tuesday, the two Greek teams will play at home: Panathinaikos-Maccabi and Olympiacos-Villeurban.
