The Regional Logistics Center for Humanitarian Assistance (CLRAH), located in Panama and one of the five in the world, sent 1,496 tons of supplies to different countries in America and the Caribbean between January and November, the highest quantity since it was inaugurated in 2018, the Panamanian Government reported this Sunday.
This assistance of 1,496 tons of supplies, dispatched to 38 nations of the continent and valued at 26.9 million dollars, served to face the covid-19 pandemic and the effects of natural disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti last August.
The Panamanian Ministry of Government indicated in a statement that according to CLRAH reports, in 2018 the entity handled 886 tons of assistance valued at 8 million dollars; in 2019 there were 603 tons worth 4 million dollars; In 2020, 1,492 tons valued at 24.1 million dollars were worked.
“In this difficult time worldwide, from the so-called ‘humanitarian hub’ the burden was doubled, providing the entire continent with support to face covid-19 and assist those nations affected by natural phenomena such as hurricanes,” said the minister. of Government, Janaina Tewaney Mencomo.
Panama inaugurated in November 2018 the CLRAH, also known as the “humanitarian hub of the Americas”, with a storage capacity of 12,000 square meters.
Its founding users are the Panamanian relief agency Sinaproc, and the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD), operated by the World Food Program (WFP); and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRCO).
This facility serves as a logistics platform to facilitate the activities of reception, handling, storage and redistribution of supplies and equipment, and allow the mobilization of human resources for an efficient management of relief and humanitarian assistance in the face of national and international emergencies that may occur in the region due to natural or other effects.
The other global humanitarian distribution centers are located in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), the Canary Islands (Spain), Brindisi (Italy) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), according to official information.
