Panama City, June 2 (EFE) .- The Panamanian Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported this Thursday 3,789 new cases of covid-19 and 4 deaths from the disease, for a total of 865,500 confirmed infections and 8,262 deaths. in more than 2 years of pandemic.
The daily report of the Minsa indicates that there are 35 admitted to the Intensive Care Units (ICU) and 245 in the room, while 30,493 are isolated at home and 40 in hotels.
The patients who have healed add up to 826,425 since March 9, 2020 when the first case of contagion occurred in Panama, where covid-19 has a lethality of 1%, one of the lowest in Latin America.
In the last 24 hours, 16,707 tests were applied to detect cases of covid-19, which showed a positivity of 22.7%. In Panama, 6,286,786 tests have been applied to date.
Regarding the progress of the vaccination process, the report of the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) of the Ministry of Health shows that since January 20, 2021, 8,254,408 doses of vaccines against covid-19 have been administered in Panama.
The scope or coverage of immunization in the target population older than 5 years with the first dose is at least 87.6%; with the second dose, 78.2%; and 50.3% with the first booster dose applied to the segment over 16 years of age.
The Central American country is facing a fifth wave of covid-19 with an increase in infections and positivity, driven by the omicron variant and its two subvariants, BA 1 and BA 2, according to official data.
The authorities urge people to apply the coronavirus vaccines, especially to those who are missing the first and second booster doses that help increase the body’s immunity against covid-19 and avoid health complications and hospitalizations.
They recommend maintaining biosecurity measures such as the use of the mask, alcohol gel, the face shield in public passenger transport, hand washing, physical distancing, and the use of alcohol. EFE
