Panama City, Oct 5 (EFE) .- Panama’s health authorities reported this Tuesday 253 new cases and six deaths from covid-19, which brought confirmed infections to 468,114 and 7,250 deaths from the disease in almost 19 months of pandemic.
There are 43 patients hospitalized in intensive care units (ICU) and 194 in the general ward, while 2,581 are isolated at home and 107 in hotels, according to the daily report of the Ministry of Health (Minsa).
During the day, 6,894 tests were applied to detect the new coronavirus SAR-CoV-2, which causes covid-19, which yielded a positivity of 3.6%.
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers a positivity of 5% or less as a parameter that indicates a control of the pandemic.
The pandemic indicators have been on a downward trend for several weeks, which has led the authorities to lift mobility restriction measures in almost the entire country and authorize the opening of bars and nightclubs with reduced capacity if they accept people not vaccinated.
The authorities have asked for caution and that biosecurity measures continue to be maintained, such as the use of a mask, which is mandatory, and physical distance, a message that they have insisted on after certain disorders registered at the weekend on beaches and parties nocturnal.
The advance of vaccination against covid, which began on January 20 and has already reached 74.5% of the target population (people 12 years of age and older), is one of the factors that has influenced the reduction of the incidence of the pandemic, say local experts.
According to official data, 5,569,643 portions of vaccine have been applied in the Central American country, of which 2,994,147 correspond to first doses and 2,572,546 to second.
A total of 2,950 inoculations correspond to third doses, which in Panama are applied to people with depressed immune systems, to patients with certain diseases that affect them and from this week also to those over 55 years of age, health workers and members of the Joint Task Force. EFE
