The Panama women’s soccer team beat its counterpart from Costa Rica that Sunday (1-0), in the first of two friendly matches that were played at the Alejandro Morera stadium, in the city of Alajuela.
The match is the debut of the Spanish Toña Is (María Antonia Is Piñera), as coach of the visitors from the canal country, and the goal was scored by Schiandra González.
In the final minutes of the match, especially in stoppage time, the Ticos, led by fellow Spaniard Beni Rubido, increased the pressure, although without the expected results.
The two teams will meet again on Wednesday, October 30, in another friendly match, based at the Sports Complex of the Costa Rican Football Federation.
The respective squads begin new processes for upcoming international commitments, including the qualifiers for the Brazil 2027 Women’s World Cup.
According to official statistics, until this challenge, the women’s teams of Panama and Costa Rica have faced each other 11 times and the balance favors the Ticos, who have nine wins over two of the Canaleras.
The last time they met was in July 2022, for the World Cup held in Monterrey, Mexico, where Costa Rica won 3-0.
In September 2021, in a friendly match, in which Panama achieved its last victory against this rival and where, for the first time in its history, it achieved a victory on Costa Rican soil, thanks to goals from Gabriela Villagrand and Marta Cox, with final result of 2-1.
