Panama City, Jan 16. The Ministry of Health of Panama (Minsa) reported this Monday 1,025 new cases of covid-19 and 5 deaths from the disease registered between Sunday 8 and Saturday 14 January, which brings infections to 1,028,272 and 8,589 deaths in more than two years of pandemic.

In its weekly epidemiological report, the health entity indicated that last Saturday there were 4 patients admitted for the coronavirus in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) and 82 in the ward, while 1,452 were isolated at home.

Between January 8 and 14, 18,498 tests were applied to detect cases of covid-19, with an overall percentage of positivity of 5.5%.

The patients who have healed total 1,018,145 since March 9, 2020, when the first case of contagion was detected in Panama, which has been going through a sixth pandemic wave since last November.

Regarding the vaccination process, the Minsa Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) indicates that since January 20, 2021 in Panama, 8,710,245 doses of covid-19 vaccine have been administered, mostly from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer.

Children under 11 years of age have received 495,282 pediatric doses of Pfizer, 12,474 of them to infants between 6 months and 45 years of age, according to PAI data.

The health authorities approved last December the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech bivalent vaccine, whose first batch of 75,600 doses arrived on January 11 and will be applied to the population aged 12 or over who already have at least 2 doses of monovalent immunization, the Minsa said.
