PAN questions Environment Minister on wolf deaths

-PUB-

“The PAN regrets the death of specimens of this protected species, for which it has presented several initiatives that aim to contribute to a more effective protection of the same”, explains the party in a statement.

“As is publicly known, the circumstances in which the deaths of these two animals occurred have not yet been determined. Unfortunately, they are not the only case and there is once again the loss of two specimens of a species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula whose conservation status is in danger”, criticizes Inês Sousa Real, spokeswoman and member of the PAN.

In the interpellation presented to the Assembly of the Republic, PAN questions the Ministry of the Environment about “the steps taken following the death of two more animals” and also wants to know what “measures are being adopted by the guardianship to stop further losses of specimens ”. The PAN also intends for the ministry to publish the results of the processes opened in 2021 and 2022 related to the slaughter of the Iberian wolf in Portugal and whether there were any criminal reports.

The PAN stresses that it has been proposing several initiatives, namely in the State Budget for 2023 and 2022, namely, for the creation of a new order that allows the resumption of payment of compensation for damage to animals caused by the Iberian wolf. The PAN even saw the unanimous approval of an initiative in this sense in Parliament, which also aimed to promote awareness-raising actions for the adoption of preventive measures to prevent wolf attacks. “The Government needs to do what it is responsible for and fulfill the commitments it frequently invokes in terms of biodiversity and thus stop the loss of emblematic species such as the Iberian wolf”, stresses Inês de Sousa Real.
