Mexico City. The National Action Party (PAN) has set November 10 as the “probable” date for the definition of its next national leadership, and the next presidency of its National Executive Committee (CEN) will be elected with the vote of its members.
With one week to go before issuing the call for the internal process, the National Organizing Committee for the Election of the National Executive Committee (Conecen) has scheduled to establish at least one debate between the candidates, the possibility of a second round of voting, as well as a lock to prevent members of the PAN leadership from supporting any candidate. Doing so could result in the cancellation of the candidate’s registration as a sanction.
According to the dates set by the PAN, the current president, Marko Cortés Mendoza, will remain as acting Senator and national leader for at least two months before his replacement is finalized.
This Thursday, the Conocen announced that, once the internal process is decided by the vote of the militants, it will be a contest that “involves campaigns with proposals, a debate between the candidates, the installation of voting centers, and a whole democratic effervescence that is not currently seen in any other political force.”
According to the statutes of the political institute, “the slate that obtains the absolute majority of votes, or 37 percent with a difference of at least 5 percentage points with the second place, will be elected, with the possibility of a second round if no candidate manages to obtain these results,” it said in a statement.
Meanwhile, in an interview with La Jornada, Cecilia Romero Castillo, a member of the Organizing Committee, explained that, in addition to the requirements for the candidates, they are planning to define “demands for the party leadership at the national, state and municipal levels and for party officials.”
He stressed that “party officials, from the national president to the last employee of the last municipal committee, will be prohibited from participating in campaign teams of any of the candidates. Not only during their working hours, because then this lends itself to saying, ‘I’m going to leave work and I can go campaign with so-and-so’. No, it is a decision that we have made in the commission, that party officials will not be able to participate in supporting any candidate.”
Asked if this type of violation will lead to the cancellation of registration as candidates, she replied that “this commission does not have the power to sanction. In any case, we will have to refer the matter to the commissions, the justice commission, the internal order and discipline commission of the party so that sanctions are imposed and, of course, in any case, any candidacy is suspended if necessary. We are in that position of not allowing this type of act to take place.”
The members of the Conocen foresee that the formal call for the renewal of the PAN presidency will be issued next week.
