Palmeiras, owned by Abel Ferreira, was, early this Friday, eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Brazilian Cup by São Paulo after losing in the 2nd leg at home by 2-1, after also having been defeated away, in the 1st, by 1-0.
Verdão even started better and evened the tie in the 1st half, thanks to a goal from Uruguayan winger Piquerez (34′). The story, however, turned out to be different after the break. Caio Paulista equalized, at 49′, and David sentenced the final result as soon as the curtain fell, at 89′.
This, it should be noted, was the 4th consecutive game without a win for Palmeiras.
Bahia, by Renato Paiva, was also eliminated from the competition. After a 1-1 draw in the 1st leg against Grémio, the two teams recorded the same result in the 2nd leg. On penalties, the team guided by the Portuguese coach lost by 4-3.
Thus, Grémio, Flamengo (who beat Ath. Paranaense) and São Paulo have already secured a place in the semi-finals of the Brazilian Cup. The last vacancy is still to be determined, which will be decided in the duel between Corinthians and América Mineiro.
