Palestinian top politician Erekat dies after coronavirus infection | Abroad

Erekat was one of the key figures in Palestinian politics for decades. There are some 2,700 known corona deaths in Israel so far. In the West Bank, where many Palestinians live and where there is less concern, the figures indicate a death number of more than 500.

Among other things, he led the Palestinian team in the negotiations with Israel on the so-called Oslo peace agreements. Erekat also held a top position with the Palestine liberation organization PLO.

Palestinian President Abbas’ office confirmed that Erekat has died in a Jerusalem hospital. The politician, who had undergone a lung transplant in the US in 2017, is said to have been on artificial respiration there and eventually artificially put into a coma.
