Students angry at the war in Gaza rallied at the Sorbonne university in Paris today, chanting “Freedom in Palestine” outside the institution’s gates, while some set up tents in the courtyard.
It is recalled that the movement in support of the Palestinians and against the war started ten days ago from Columbia University in New York and has spread to many others, from California to the northwest of the USA, passing through the central states and to the south, while it seems that are also spreading in Europe.
Similar demonstrations took place days ago at the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po), as the devastating war enters its seventh month.
The protests, which led the university administration to close the building for the rest of the day, were peaceful, with students asking the institution, one of the oldest universities in the world, to condemn Israel’s actions.
Police forces were deployed on the street in front of the university’s main entrance and were confronted by a group of about 50 students, a Reuters reporter reported.
According to Palestinian authorities, Israel has killed at least 34,488 Palestinians in its operations in Gaza in retaliation for an October 7 attack by Hamas that left 1,200 dead and more than 200 hostages, according to elements of the Israeli authorities.
French politicians such as Mathilde Panot, who leads the left-wing LFI parliamentary group in the French National Assembly, called on voters to join the protests on social media.
