Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas prepares to visit Moscow: Updates on Palestinian-Russian relations and Middle East tensions

The visits of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Russia is in preparationhe will visit Moscow.

This was stated to RBC by the country’s ambassador to Russia, Abdel Hafiz Nofal.

“We are waiting for an official statement from the Kremlin, from the Russian side, about when the visit will take place. It was agreed that Mr. Abbas will come here to MoscowNofal said.

Abbas leads the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (“Fatah”), a party that competes with Hamas. The Arab territories in Palestine are divided into two parts – the Gaza Strip is controlled by “Hamas”and the West Bank of the Jordan River — by “Fatah”.

The ambassador added that at this stage there is no possibility of negotiations on the Palestinian-Israeli settlement in Moscow. He recalled that a few years ago, President Vladimir Putin proposed to hold talks between Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Russian capital and the Palestinian side immediately agreed to it.

“Then Abbas immediately visited Moscow for more than the twentieth time, but without any results. Now the situation is complicated given the events in Ukraine and around the world. If there is something serious, then we are ready to talk about it,” Nofal said. The ambassador emphasized that now the most important thing is to reduce the tension in the situation, “and then maybe a window for negotiations will open“.

Hamas has hinted at a truce with Israel

The objectives of the operation were achieved

The diplomat noted that it is now necessary to stop the killings, including of Palestinians. “So far only in Gaza there is terrible destruction. More than 800 people were killed, more than 3 thousand were injured,” Nofal said.

Speaking about the situation with the taken hostages, the ambassador noted that there is no information on how many people are being held by Hamas. “Even the Israeli side does not officially announce how many people are hostages. How many Russians, how many Europeans, how many Americans. There is no official statement from either the Israeli side or Hamas on how many hostages they haveNofal clarified. According to him, we have to wait, since there is no information from either Israel or Hamas.
