Amman: Famous Palestinian poet and novelist Maurid Barghouti has died at the age of 76. Maurid, who spent three-quarters of his life in exile after returning to his homeland following the Israeli occupation, died in the Jordanian capital, Amman. He is a poet who carried the banner of the Palestinian struggle.
Born on the outskirts of Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Maurid could not return to his homeland after studying in Egypt in 1963. Maurid, who took refuge in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, continued to write about his homeland’s independence.
His wife, Radhva Ashoura, an Egyptian, died in 2014. Radhva translated Maurid’s famous autobiographical novel ‘I So Ramalla’ into English. The only son is the Arab poet Tamim Barghouti. Maurid returned to Ramallah in the 1990s after decades of exile following the Oslo Accords.
