Tragic were the final moments experienced by the passengers of the yacht Bayesian as they frantically searched for air as the luxury vessel sank in Palermo.
At yesterday’s press conference the divers of the specialist rescue team described in dramatic detail the extraordinary challenges they faced at a depth of more than 50 metres. The 30 divers were only allowed to visit the seabed for 12-minute periods each day, from sunrise to sunset.
Palermo fire chief and rescue team member Bentivoglio Fiandra described how the Bayesian sank with its stern forward before rolling onto its starboard side.
“The victims sought refuge on the port side of the boat, where the last reserves of air remained as the boat sank,” he said, according to a report in The Sun newspaper.
In the first cabin on the left the divers discovered five bodies, in the third cabin on the left they discovered the body of Lynch’s daughter Hannah.
“We entered the rooms, wardrobes and furniture swirled around us and mirrors reflected the lights back at us. The bodies were all wedged in tight spots, with furniture on or next to them.”
