Palacio de Bornos, the first Spanish winery to receive the Ecomethod accreditation for reducing the carbon footprint

Bornos Palace, belonging to the Rueda Designation of Origin, has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability and the environment with the Ecomethod certification. The wine company becomes like this in the first Spanish winery in achieving this accreditation for reducing its CO2 emissions by 85.50% in its entire operation of vineyards of more than 300 hectares, in Rueda, Pollos and La Seca.

Ecomethod is the only nutritional technique on the market that allows rereduce and replace fertilizers traditionally applied to crops, in favor of specific foliar nutrition programs, in order to obtain a reduction in CO2 emissions in the atmosphere.

«Having a minimum impact on the environment, conserving our environment and preserving it for future generations, is in the DNA of the Bornos project. The Ecomethod certificate is one more step that we take in our commitment to responsible and sustainable methods of cultivation and production of our wines, to contribute to the fight against climate change ”, he highlights Ana Martín, Head of Viticulture at Palacio de Bornos.

Fertilize vines with a reduced carbon footprint

Responsible companies such as Palacio de Bornos know that climate change and other environmental problems can impact many of their areas of action. For this reason, More than 20 years ago they decided to test an innovative and respectful fertilizer program in their vineyards with the environment, Total Foliar Nutrition (NTF), in the hands of Agritec Medina agricultural technicians and BMS Micro-Nutrients products that are committed to sustainable and respectful agriculture.

The foliar fertilization that the Valladolid winery is using in its vineyards consists of the aapplication of nutrients through vine leaves, to correct, increase availability and replace the lack or deficiency of some elements that cannot be absorbed efficiently by the roots of the plant.

«We have prioritized foliar nutrition over any other type of fertilizer, replacing the traditional fertilizer to the soil with foliar applications. With this, apart from avoiding deficiencies and imbalances in the plant and guaranteeing a superior quality in production, we achieve an environmental improvement, avoid excess fertilizers in the soils and minimize the contamination of nitrates and nitrites in the surface layers of the soil », says Ana Martin.

The carbon footprint is the main environmental indicator which is used to evaluate the impact that an activity generates on climate change and refers to the amount of greenhouse effect gases that generates directly or indirectly. The fertilization footprint that a winery can generate can be considerably reduced with the type of program offered by the Ecomethod system.

For Ana Martín, being the first winery to achieve this recognition is something rewarding and recognizes Bornos’ commitment to quality and respect for the environment. «This certification is the reward for a job of many years. A recognition of our effort and commitment to the environment and our primary objective: the commitment to innovative and sustainable viticulture ”, remarks the head of viticulture at Palacio de Bornos.

In the wine sector, the Ecomethod project can become a differentiating element compared to other wineries that continue to apply traditional fertilization methods in the production of their wines. “Given the upward trend in the market regarding the consumption of products linked to sustainability, this certification allows us to further differentiate our wines and demonstrate our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint,” explains Ana Martín.

Environmental responsibility in three keys

In its commitment to sustainable viticulture, Palacio de Bornos has been developing its Corporate Social Responsibility policy for more than 20 years.

He started his project towards sustainability together with the Bayer company, carrying out annual projects of Food Chain Partnership and in 2016 they included the first sustainable effluent management system from Castilla y León, Phytobac.

With the recent Ecomethod certification, it contributes to its CSR program with the reduction of the carbon footprint in its productive activity, as well as the minimization of the environmental impact in the fertilization of your vineyards and, therefore, in the elaboration of its wines.
