The evening rush hour started early on Tuesday because of Pakjesavond. At its peak, there were 861 kilometers of traffic jams. “That is 200 kilometers more than normal on a Tuesday,” says an ANWB spokesperson. The crowds are now slowly decreasing.
Around 6:30 PM there were still 118 kilometers. “You can clearly see that people have left earlier than normal,” an ANWB spokesperson said earlier in the day. “Where there are problems on the road, delays increase considerably. This means that many people are already in the car.”
The delays are mainly due to accidents. For example, traffic around Eindhoven was completely blocked due to an accident on the A67 near Eersel. As a result, there were also long traffic jams on the A2 and A58.
On the A2, an overturned sweeper truck near Elsloo caused a delay of more than an hour in the direction of Maastricht. On the A27 near Gorinchem, holes in the road surface caused delays.
Rijkswaterstaat recorded 300 kilometers of traffic jam around 4 p.m. “Normally there is about 145 kilometers of traffic jam around this time,” the service reported. These figures do not include traffic jams on N-roads.
Traffic services also expect additional delays after the ‘Sinterklaas rush hour’. That’s because of the weather. Snow is expected in the north and northeast. That is why code yellow applies to the Wadden Islands, Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. It may be slippery there until Wednesday morning.
