A spokesman for the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs says he expects the Pakistani authorities to investigate the matter extensively. Prime Minister Khan said on Twitter that such an investigation will be carried out and that those responsible will be severely punished. More than 100 people have been arrested, according to police in Punjab.
Blasphemy, of which the victim was accused, is a crime punishable by death in Pakistan. Groups of radical Muslims carry out attacks more often because they have experienced blasphemy.
The crowds also regularly kill alleged blasphemers. Last week, a group of Muslims set fire to a police station in northwest Pakistan after officers allegedly insulted the prophet Mohammed.
