Lahore: The government of Pakistan has warned that strict measures will be taken if children are reluctant to get vaccinated. International media The Guardian reports that Pakistan is preparing to take punitive measures against parents who are not ready to be vaccinated. According to the report, parents who refuse to vaccinate their children could be fined or even jailed under a new law introduced in Sindh province.
The new reform is part of efforts to eradicate polio, which has been making sporadic appearances in Pakistan. This includes refusing to vaccinate against diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, measles and rubella. Parents who refuse to vaccinate their children can be punished with one month’s imprisonment or a fine of fifty thousand Pakistani rupees (Rs 13,487). According to The Guardian’s report, the law was signed into law last week and will come into effect this month.
Shazia Mari, a former poverty alleviation and social security minister from Sindh, welcomed the new decision, the Guardian reported. Shazia Mari responded that this law would be beneficial to end vaccination refusal. The minister stated that more steps need to be taken to eradicate polio and the government will take steps for that. According to the World Health Organization, two cases of polio have been reported in Pakistan in 2023. In 2022, 20 cases were reported. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries still affected by polio.
