Pakistan General Election 2024: Nawaz Sharif Returns, Imran Khan in Jail, Bilawal Bhutto Contends

Pakistan goes to the polling booth today amidst conflicts and political dramas. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto’s son Bilawal Bhutto are the main contenders. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan is not in the field as he is in jail

Will Nawaz Sharif, who has returned after four years abroad, become the prime minister again? Or will Imran Khan’s supporters retaliate through the ballot? The answer will be known soon. Polling is from 8 am to 5 pm local time. Out of the total 336 seats in the National Assembly, 266 seats are directly elected. 60 seats and 10 seats for women

Non-Muslims will also be exempted. Observers believe that Nawaz Sharif has a higher chance of winning.

His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has not been able to make much of a splash in the campaign as his main rival, Imran Khan, is in jail after being convicted in criminal cases. It was Imran Khan who formed the largest single party government in the 2018 elections.

Bilawal Bhutto, the leader of the Pakistan People’s Party and the son of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who is currently in power with Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, is also in the race. Heavy security has been provided at the polling stations in the wake of the blasts that took place in Balochistan yesterday. Polling is underway for all the four state assemblies.
