Pakistan Election Results: PTI-backed Independent Candidates Lead, Allegations of Delay and Rigging

Even after two days of polling, counting of votes is not over in Pakistan. Independent candidates backed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are currently leading in the elections held on February 8. Since Imran Khan and PTI were banned from the election due to being in jail, PTI leaders contested as independents.

According to the results of 256 seats out of 266 assembly constituencies, 93 seats were won by PTI-backed independent candidates. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party have won 73 and 54 seats respectively.

Although the full results are not out, it is certain that no party can come to power alone. Therefore, a coalition government will come to power in Pakistan. PML-N and PPP have held talks to form the government after inconclusive talks but no final decision has been reached.

Amidst the attacks, many allegations have been raised globally that the results of the elections were delayed. The United States, London and the European Union have criticized the election process. The Election Commission has informed that re-election will be held in NA-88 (Khushab II), PS-18 (Khotki I) and PK-90 (Kohat I) due to alleged rigging of the election. The PTI has also called for peaceful protests across the country demanding that the integrity of the elections be preserved.

Meanwhile, three successful independent candidates have joined the PML-N amid an indefinite delay in the declaration of results. Barrister Akhweel, Raja Khurram Nawaz and Mian Khan Bugti who won NA-54, 48 and 253 seats respectively joined Nawaz Sharif’s party.
