Painted birds director Václav Marhoul, which is a film adaptation of the world-famous bestseller of the same name by the writer Jerzy Kosiński, was introduced to the audience for the first time in the main competition of the Venice International Film Festival. The camera was taken over by the top cameraman Vladimír Smutný, who shot on a black-and-white 35 mm negative in the Cinemascope format.
