The American company Axalta Coating Systems, which supplies paints and varnishes, published results an annual survey of the world’s most popular car colors. In 2020, the most popular color was white, which has been holding the leadership for 10 years in a row.
About 38% of new cars sold in 2020 were painted all white or had a pearl-colored body. Black is in second place in popularity with a score of 19%, and gray closes the top three with a score of 15%.
Next on the list are silver (9%), blue (7%), red (5%), brown (3%), as well as yellow (2%) and green (1%). Cars of other colors, including orange, were preferred by less than 1% of buyers.
Part of this popularity of white can be explained by the fact that it is the basic color for many manufacturers, so cars of this color are cheaper. For example, the most popular foreign car in Russia – Kia Rio – in a white body color comes without extra charge, while for a car in black, red or brown you will have to pay an additional 6 thousand rubles.
In addition, experts provided statistics on the most popular flowers in different regions. So, in Russia, white cars hold the lead, but their share is slightly less than the world average – 33%. In second place is gray with 16%, and in third – beige and brown shades (11%). Axalta noted that Russia has the highest share of brown cars in comparison with the rest of the world.
Gray cars dominate Europe and North America, accounting for 25% and 19% of sales in 2020, respectively. The largest share of white cars is sold in China, where they account for more than half of all sales (57%).
