Pain in three parts of the face can be a symptom of lung cancer

Symptoms of lung cancer can also be felt on the face.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Pain in three parts of the face could be a symptom of a tumor growing in the lungs. Cancer can start in almost any cell of the body, due to damage to genes involved in cell division.

Cancer is characterized by the appearance of bad cells that multiply in an uncontrolled way. The wild cells eventually spread into tumors that can continue to invade other tissues.

It is these bad cells that continue to grow that make this condition very difficult to treat. However, detecting suspicious symptoms early can support recovery.

Common characteristics of people with cancer are weight loss, unusual bleeding and constant fatigue that doesn’t go away with sleep. Pain is another key sign of cancer, a complaint that affects between 20 and 50 percent of patients.

“Syndrome facial pain which is unusual, has been seen in patients with lung carcinoma. Many of these patients describe constant and sometimes sharp pain, which may have a paroxysmal component.” Science Direct.

The pain is usually located in the ear and temple area and sometimes in the jaw. In some reports, cancer patients describe bouts of debilitating facial pain, which presents as cluster headaches.

This is the case of one patient whose medical report is detailed in Journal of Orofacial Pain. The researchers note that pain is common, and on rare occasions it can be a symptom of lung cancer.

“Facial pain is almost always unilateral and is most often localized to the ear, jaw, and temple area. The pain is often described as quite severe and aching, it may be continuous or intermittent,” they say.
