Often, pain in the nose (nasal) represents one of the specific clinical manifestations of various nasal conditions characteristic of the otorhinolaryngological sphere. The pain can, however, have different forms and intensities, depending on the causative condition and can lead to worsening the patient’s quality of life and even preventing the performance of certain physical activities.
Usually, the conditions that can lead to pain in the nose are the following: nasal trauma, sinusitis, rhinitis, nasal polyps, deviation of the nasal septum. For the correct diagnosis of the various types of conditions that lead to the appearance of nose pain, a medical consultation is necessary, which must include a thorough anamnesis, clinical examination of the nasal passages and sinuses, as well as the performance of certain paraclinical investigations imposed by the attending physician handle the case.
According to Dr. Denisa Vrânceanu, the anamnesis must include data related to the time of onset of nose pain, the presence of certain triggering factors, the way the pain evolves, from the time of onset to the time of presentation to the doctor.
The clinical examination of the patient involves the evaluation by the doctor of the nasal passages and sinuses, with the help of special instruments. Also, rhinoscopy allows the highlighting of clinical signs suggestive of sinusitis, rhinitis, deviation of the nasal septum or the intranasal development of some tumor formations and is often sufficient for the presumptive diagnosis.
“First of all, it is absolutely necessary to combat the causative disease that led to the appearance of nose pain. Its symptomatic treatment is effective throughout the persistence of the sedative effect, with its subsequent return after the cessation of the action of the drugs taken. Combating the etiological factor, the causative disease, is, however, much more effective because without it, the nose pain will no longer occur. For example, the treatment of bacterial sinusitis consists of antibiotics, and in the case of viral sinusitis, steroidal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are administered intranasally or orally”, the doctor stated.
Rhinitis treatment varies depending on the etiology. Thus, in the case of bacterial infections, antibiotic therapy is recommended, in the case of viral inflammations, anti-inflammatory drugs are administered, and in the case of allergic rhinitis, the administration of anti-allergic drugs is recommended.
Nasal cancer treatment is complex and involves surgical removal of the intranasal tumor formation (if possible), chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In the case of nasal polyps, they must be removed, and if you have a deviated septum, septoplasty can be performed (a small incision to remove the excess bone or cartilage existing at that level).
