Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has warned that Brazil, Dominican Republic and Peru are at “very high risk” of polio recurrence. This is due to the drop in the immunization rate in America against the disease by 79%.
According to PAHO, vaccination coverage in America against polio has dropped to 79%, the lowest level since 1994.

The institution has remembered this poliomyelitis can cause irreversible paralysis in some casesbut it can be prevented with a vaccine first made available in 1955. Although no cure is known, three injections of the vaccine provide nearly 100% immunity.
Earlier this month, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared an emergency in the state in order to accelerate efforts to vaccinate residents. This is after the virus has been detected in the samples.
After the alarm in New York, the PAHO health agency recommended it all countries must achieve high coverage with over 95% of girls and boys vaccinated.
“It is important that all countries / territories in the region strengthen surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis cases to ensure a timely response against the detection of an import of a wild poliovirus or a vaccine-derived poliovirus or the emergence of a vaccine-derived poliovirus, “warned PAHO.
How does polio spread?
Polio spreads from person to person, usually when someone comes in contact with the feces of an infected person and then touches their mouth. Less commonly, polio can spread when droplets from an infected person sneeze or cough.
