PAHO warns Mexico of a 75 percent increase in covid-19 cases

MEXICO CITY (appro). – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued a warning to Mexico due to the 75% increase in covid-19 infections in the last week.

The figure skyrocketed from 5,200 to 12,000 new cases in just three weeks, for which he pointed out that, although the figure is “manageable”, preventive and public health measures such as vaccination must be maintained.

“In Mexico, there is indeed a rebound in cases in the third consecutive week and 12,000 new cases were registered, at a time when there were 5,200 cases, more or less, 75 percent compared to the previous week,” said the director of PAHO Health Emergencies, Ciro Ugarte.

He highlighted that the occupancy of general beds in hospitals, as well as intensive care, remain between one and four percent, respectively.

“Although it must be considered that these are relative increases and the number of cases, compared to other weeks of high transmission of the pandemic, are still manageable. It is necessary to maintain preventive measures and public health measures, ”he insisted.

That is why the organization’s experts insisted on the importance of seasonal vaccination against the flu (influenza) and highlighted the importance of completing the covid-19 inoculation scheme.

“In such a way that these measures are the ones that we must continue to implement, as we have said many times, some of these measures may be seen by the rest of the population as exaggerated. Actually, it is not. Both prevention measures and vaccination for influenza and for COVID-19 are extremely important, ”he assured.

He asked the population not to wait to get infected or sick: if there are vaccines available, they can be given them.

“If you want to protect yourself and also your families, do it as soon as possible,” he added.

Ugarte said that in Mexico and other Latin American countries, it is hurricane season, so he expressed his concern about the possibility of contagion because many people will be transferred to shelters, which are narrow spaces.

In America, the number of infections increased last week to one million, 10% more than last week and there were about 4,200 deaths, 14% more, experts explained.
