Same nurses for extended services and shifts. This is the situation that will occur at Oncology department of the Andrea Tortora hospital in Pagani. The specialist division was inaugurated a week ago, but will become operational from 2 May. A necessary technical time, explained the head physician Giuseppe Di Lorenzo, to allow the transfer of furniture and equipment, but also for the organization of shifts. A timetable also indicated by the general director of the ASL, Gennaro Sosto, at the ribbon cutting in the presence of the president of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca.
What is of most concern, however, is the shift of nurses. This was revealed by the CISL Provincial Public Service, which sent a letter to company and supervisory leaders raising a series of critical issues. In fact, the nurses on duty, 19 plus the coordinator, until now were able to guarantee a variety of outpatient activities because they were not employed on shifts as the Oncology department was hosted by the Hematology department. In short, healthcare workers could dedicate themselves to other oncology care activities.
Now, having to cover shifts in the ward, providing assistance to the eight residential inpatient beds, to which are added the 10 in day hospital, the blanket becomes short. They underlined it Gianfranco Maiorino, Andrea Pastore e Alfonso Della Porta: «While recognizing the concrete commitment and merit that allowed the creation of the Oncology department”, the CISL FP “is forced to point out the serious healthcare inconvenience to which the patients and consequently the staff risk being exposed and subjected”. In short, to «ensure the ordinary management of the shifts of the department’s employees, there is a concrete risk of compromising the annexed and connected services, which are inevitably reflected and the particular “frailty” of cancer patients is negatively expected».
