The San Diego Padres slammed the table. They defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 and took a 2-1 lead in the National League division series in the Major Leagues. A six-run rally in the second inning, including a home run by star Fernando Tatis Jr., marked the course of a game in which thousands of people painted Petco Park yellow.
One of the Padres’ biggest challenges was stopping Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese star who surpassed the mark of 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season. The Japanese had a hit and scored one of the Dodgers’ lines on the board, after solid work by pitchers Michael King and Jeremiah Estrada.
Ohtani seemed uncomfortable, he couldn’t combine his power in the batter’s box with his speed running the bases. Only a full return hit by Teoscar Hernández, with the pads full, managed to bring the Angelina closer in the third roll, after a solo home run by Mookie Betts.
From then on, the Padres went scoreless in six consecutive innings. Manny Machado had two hits, Jackson Merrill added another and, although there were no more RBIs, closer Robert Suárez’s job was even easier. The atmosphere at the Petco Park stadium was unbeatable. The public said goodbye to their team with deafening shouts and yellow towels in full height, after taking control of the series.
For the Dodgers, the only thing left is to seek victory tonight, on the same stage, to avoid their final fall. The focus will once again be on what Ohtani can do.
