Paderborn residents can donate blood at the Schützenhof

For weeks, the blood donation service of the German Red Cross has found it very difficult to meet hospitals’ need for life-saving blood donations due to infectious diseases, respiratory diseases and the flu epidemic among donors. Eventually, the stocks had even been used up to the absolutely critical threshold of only one daily requirement. That is why the DRK is happy with the 135 bags of fresh blood that could be taken from the Schützenhof. The blood can now be used in cancer therapies and life-saving operations in the coming days, according to Oliver Kraatz, vice president of the local DRK association in Paderborn.

The change of location was necessary because the parking situation at the DRK building on Neuhäuser Strasse, where until the end of last year the blood donation service stopped weekly with a large truck to take blood, had become very difficult. The DRK justified this by stating that the buildings would be used more intensively once the corona pandemic had subsided.

In addition to larger, barrier-free rooms, numerous parking spaces are now available directly at the Schützenhof building. In addition, the gastronomy and in good weather the beer garden at the Schützenhof are open, which invites you to linger and enjoy the Schützenplatz after the donation. At the new Schützenhof donation site, all healthy people over the age of 18 can now regularly donate blood one Wednesday a month. Blood Donation Service West posts dates on its website. Next is Wednesday February 8th from 4-8pm.

DRK Paderborn is looking for volunteers

“We are overwhelmed by the willingness of the population to give in the new year,” says Oliver Kraatz. “We would like to thank all the blood donors for their help and hopefully in the spring, once many coronavirus restrictions are lifted, we will finally be able to honor anniversary donors with 25, 50, 100 or even 150 donations of blood. We will invite all donors in good time.” While blood donations are taken by the blood donation service, the care of blood donors before and after the donation is the task of the local DRK association in Paderborn.

The volunteers of the Paderborn Red Cross are always looking for active care and catering support in order to be able to arrange appointments at the Schützenhof and numerous other places for all donors: more information at www.spenderservice.net And www.drkpaderborn.org.
