Paderborn/Dortmund. Shkodran Mustafi drew the second round of the DFB Cup on Sunday evening on “ARD-Sportschau”. But the 2014 world champion didn’t bring SC Paderborn any luck in the draw at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. The OWL second division team caught an away game against a first division team. A long journey awaits the SCP, as the Paderborn team is playing at SC Freiburg. The game will be played on Tuesday, October 31st or Wednesday, November 1st.
“Playing away to a Bundesliga club is always a difficult task. Freiburg has done a lot right in recent years and can therefore be a role model for up-and-coming clubs. We are looking forward to the challenging task,” says SCP sports director Benjamin Weber, commenting on the cup ticket.
The SCP will then have a lot of travel stress in an English week anyway. Reason: On the last weekend in October, coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team will be visiting Hertha BSC Berlin. Then we go to Freiburg. And on the first weekend in November, the Paderborn team has to play against Karlsruher SC. Both league games, like the cup game, have not yet been exactly scheduled.
The last duel went to Paderborn
After all: The SCP doesn’t have any bad memories of guest appearances in Freiburg. Paderborn have already celebrated three wins in six away games in Breisgau. Even in the last duel so far, the East Westphalia team retained the upper hand. The SCP won 2-0 in Freiburg on January 25, 2020. It was also the last win in the 2019/20 Bundesliga relegation season.
With their move into the second round, the Paderborn team will already receive DFB bonuses amounting to almost 650,000 euros. There would be a further 862,400 euros for the round of 16 qualification. Should Paderborn make it to the quarter-finals, as they did in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons, the second division team would even be guaranteed bonuses totaling 3.23 million euros.
