PACTOLE for Marc Wilmots: Iran will have to pay millions of euros to its former coach

The Iranian Football Federation (FFI) must pay more than six million euros in compensation to its former national coach Marc Wilmots, according to a decision by FIFA, the international football federation. The FFI will appeal the Iranian News Agency reported on Monday.

The FIFA ruling has drawn strong criticism in Iranian sports media who consider € 6 million to be exaggerated for half a year of work.

During his period at the head of the selection, Wilmots led the Iranian national team in 6 matches, including four qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup, and the last two were lost against Bahrain (1-0) and the Iraq (2-1). The 51-year-old former Red Devils coach signed a contract on May 20, 2019 to lead Iran to the World Cup in Qatar.

On December 4, however, the cooperation ended because “the Iranian federation did not honor its contractual obligations” according to Wilmots. Since leaving Iran, Marc Wilmots has not coached.
