Plastic packaging pads are out. Today, the padding material for most applications can be produced much more economically and ecologically from old cardboard boxes using the PM-42 packing padding machine from Kemapack. For mail order company Agrar-direct, for example, the investment was worth it. When it comes to packaging, the agricultural expert now saves money and protects the environment.
Agrar-direct is part of the Eder group of companies with headquarters in Tuntenhausen, Upper Bavaria, and trades very successfully in all kinds of agricultural accessories. In the year it was founded in 2004, the company still had ten employees – today the number of employees has increased to more than 30. The goods that can be ordered currently include over 35,000 items. The mail order company therefore has one of the largest spare parts warehouses in Bavaria. Every year, over 50,000 packages and over 1,000 shipping deliveries leave the company. “Our aim is to provide our customers with the requested agricultural spare and wear parts at fair prices quickly, cost-effectively and with ecological responsibility,” says Mirco Graupe. The logistics manager in the agricultural technology spare parts warehouse attaches particular importance to ecological responsibility: “When we see new approaches with which we can make our business even more environmentally friendly, then these are consistently implemented in our company.”

Packaging padding machine makes packaging material from old cardboard boxes
The PM-42 packing padding machine can be used to produce packaging padding from used cardboard boxes, as Kemapack packaging expert Thomas Hesse emphasizes: “It recycles old boxes and transforms them into padding materials that can serve as protection for sensitive items during transport.” The function is there the machine is very easy. First, the used cardboard boxes, up to 20 mm thick, are placed into the machine. The material of any width is then cut into pieces up to 420 mm wide and processed into a flexible upholstery material using a special roller system. This cushioning material is suitable for a variety of applications, such as cushioning packages or filling voids in shipping boxes. Hesse: “A main advantage of the PM-42 packing padding machine is the ability to reuse used material and thus reduce waste. This allows companies to minimize their environmental impact while saving money by not having to purchase new upholstery material.”

The group of companies ordered additional packing padding machines
At Agrar-direct, the environmentally friendly solution has now been successfully in operation for several months. And Mirco Graupe is very satisfied with it: “The machine works without any problems and has helped us save a lot of money on other packaging material. In addition, we can sensibly reuse the numerous old cardboard boxes in which we receive goods from our suppliers.” But that’s not all: so that the old material doesn’t run out, the neighboring hardware store now even delivers parts of its used boxes for recycling at Agrar-direct away. All in all, the use of the new PM-42 at Agrar-direct was very successful. So successful that other subsidiaries of the Eder Group have now ordered additional packing padding machines from the packaging specialist Kemapack.
