Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, as he was called in full, was born in 1935 in the Bulgarian city of Gabrovo. He studied at the art academy in Sofia and ended up in Paris years later, where he was inspired as a portrait painter by, among others, Jackson Pollock.
A long-cherished wish of the Bulgarian-American artist and his wife who died in 2009 was to wrap up the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Christo and his wife already came up with this idea in 1962. The construction on the Champs-Élysées is expected to be wrapped in a blue-gray cloth on September 18 next year.
