The prices of clothing, airline tickets and package tours were lower in August than twelve months previously. Partly because of this, inflation was limited to 0.7 percent. This is the lowest inflation in more than 3.5 years, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) Tuesday.
Airline tickets were no less than 21.6 percent cheaper last month than in August 2019. In July, there was actually a price increase compared to a year earlier.
Package holidays were also considerably cheaper in August (-11.5 percent) than in the same month a year earlier. This also applied to a holiday in your own country. For example, a stay in a bungalow park was 1.6 percent cheaper. These trips in their own country were considerably more expensive last month than in July 2019. This was partly because people wanted to book a holiday in their own country in July 2020 in large numbers.
Clothing prices also fell in August. Clothing was 4.5 percent cheaper than a year earlier. On the other hand, food prices actually increased (1 percent). The price of tobacco has also gone up. This was due to an increase in excise duty on 1 April.
Overall, the prices of all consumer goods and services increased on average by 0.7 percent. That was the smallest price increase since November 2016.
Statistics Netherlands compared the price development in the Netherlands with that of the eurozone. According to the measurement methods used to compare inflation in the different EU countries, the prices of consumer goods and services in the Netherlands have risen by 0.3 percent in one year. Inflation in the eurozone was -0.2 percent. This means that prices in the euro area countries have fallen on an annual basis for the first time in four years.
