Pablo Picasso’s Korean War painting shown for the first time in Seoul

Coming from the Musée Picasso de Paris, “Massacre in Korea” is an expressionist painting that the famous Spanish painter presented in 1951, in a critique of the American intervention in the Korean War.

Part of a series of anti-war works, the painting depicts the massacre in the city of Sinchon, which resulted in the death of a large number of civilians, victims of the conflict opposing North Korean communist troops against the South Korean anti-communist bloc , with support from the United States.

In its composition, the painting is inspired by the famous work of Francisco Goya, “The Third of May 1808”, which portrays Spanish civilians to be executed by Napoleonic troops led by Joachim Murat.

“Massacre in Korea” is part of a batch of 110 works that will be on display at the Seoul Arts Center, entitled “Dentro do Mito”, which runs from May 1 to August 29.
