gainesville, Fla. – Brycelynn Rivera, a junior at P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School, has achieved a significant honor in the world of STEM. She has been awarded the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition Dean’s List finalist Award, a prestigious recognition of student leaders who demonstrate remarkable leadership, promote STEM awareness, and embody the core values of FIRST Robotics.

About the FIRST Dean’s List Award

The FIRST Dean’s List Award recognizes two students from each district or regional competition. Rivera was one of two winners from the Orlando Regional selected as Regional finalists too compete at the FIRST World Championship. Typically, a regional event sees between 60 and 120 nominees.

Dr. Lynda fender Hayes, P.K. Yonge interim director,emphasized the significance of this achievement,stating,The FIRST Robotics Dean’s List Award is an honor for Brycelynn to receive. This award recognizes students for core values, technical expertise, and passion. Brycelynn embodies the PK “we over me” mindset, and we are so proud to have her as a part of our Blue Wave student body.

“The Ripple Starts With Us”: Rivera’s Impact on Roaring Riptide

Rivera’s leadership extended to developing the season theme for the Roaring Riptide team, the ripple starts with us, inspiring her peers to craft a compelling narrative. Her influence within the team is profound, shaping their values and approach to robotics.

So, what does being on Riptide actually mean? Well, it means having the heart to put others before yourself. It means not being afraid to stand up for what’s right, even if the vast majority are against you.

Assistive Technology: A Passion for Inclusivity

Rivera’s dedication to the P.K. Yonge FRC 4118 Roaring Riptide robotics team is particularly evident in her work with the #FIRSTwithAT initiative. This program focuses on adapting toys for children with limited motor skills,showcasing her commitment to assistive technology and inclusivity.

Key Contributions to Assistive Technology:

  • Mentored new team members during Adapt-a-Thon, teaching them to adapt toys and build accessible button switches.
  • Managed the creation and delivery of 500 Tidal Wave AT Kits at the FIRST World Championships.
  • Expanded the range of adapted toys and assisted with the growth of a new style of accessible button switches for children with visual impairments.

Her work has inspired other team members to expand the holiday toy adopt-a-thon, reaching more than 130 children in north central Florida. This initiative highlights the tangible impact of her leadership and passion.

Recognition and Future Aspirations

Leigh Anne Brewster,P.K. Yonge engineering teacher and Roaring Riptide coach, praised Rivera’s contributions, stating, Her leadership, creativity, and dedication have had a profound impact on her team and community.

Rivera’s academic achievements are equally notable. She is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, maintains a 4.2 weighted GPA, and has dedicated over 500 volunteer hours to her work with 4118 at demos, conferences, and the team’s assistive technology initiatives. She is scheduled to compete at the FIRST World championships in houston, Texas, from April 16-19, 2025.

P.K. Yonge last received this recognition in 2015 for Logan Hickox (PKY 2016 graduate).
