Özgü Namal Returns to Television: The Tragedy and Comeback of the Turkish Actress

The actress Özgü Namal (44) was on her way to becoming a great memory of the Turkish television series, after a retirement, on the one hand forced and on the other voluntary, of almost ten years from the recording set.

Özgü Namal and Ibrahim Celikkol were the couple in the series The Shadow of the Past (Mercy). In that production she gained artistic fame.

Ózgü had achieved television glory when she played the young lawyer Narin Yılmaz Kazan in the series Mercy (The shadow of the past or Mercy in Latin America), who starred in the 2013-2014 seasons in Turkey. However, the fame and popularity that she achieved were not enough incentive: after that success she did not accept any offer to shoot series again.

The actress, born in Istanbul in 1978, made her debut on the sets in 1998 and was a frequent member of ambitious projects. Two of them marked her career: Lady’s Ranch (La dama rebelde or La mujer de la granja in Latin America), where she faithfully plays an 18-year-old girl even though she was already 29 years old, and the aforementioned Merhamet (La sombra del pasado or Mercy), in which she shared roles leading roles with the actor Ibrahim Celikkol.

The tragedy of Ózgü Namal

The daughter of a textile manufacturer and an airport worker, Namal’s last television appearance was as a jury on Turkey’s Got Talent in the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Tragedy followed.

The actress married Ahmet Serdar Oral in 2014, with whom she had two children. Since 2015, she decided to voluntarily move away from the sert to raise her future children. She and her husband had two children and they went to live apart, near a rural village called Agla.

But in 2020 misfortune struck: Ahmet Serdar Oral suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 42. Özgü Namal received her passing so painfully that she was not even able to attend her husband’s funeral. From then on she was seen very little. She left her home where she lived with her husband’s children and approached her family and friends, but she wanted nothing to do with work.

Until now. Ózgü has agreed to return to the recording set after almost a decade. He will do it for the television series Kızıl Goncalar (Red Sprouts), where he will share the cast with the actor Ozcan Denizwhich could make up one of the most ambitious television couples of the winter season in Turkey.

For now, the central plot of the story of the Kızıl Goncalar series is not known, but it is the experienced producer Faruk Turgut who is behind the new series and the conformation of the rest of the cast that should be giving birth starting next September.
