Oxford University and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca have resumed clinical trials of the Covid-19 vaccine, which had been suspended for several days due to side effects in one of the volunteers who took part in the trials.
The trials resumed after obtaining the consent of the British Medicines Agency, according to a statement issued by the University of Oxford on Saturday. The resumption of research is “good news for everyone,” British Health Minister Matt Hankock wrote on Twitter.
For the same reasons, testing of the vaccine was suspended for several days in July. The vaccine has so far been injected by 18,000 volunteers worldwide, including in the UK, US, Brazil and South Africa, according to Oxford University.
AstraZeneca is one of nine companies with potential Covid-19 vaccines in the Phase 3 study phase. It is one of the vaccines reserved for the European Commission. AstraZeneca predicts the vaccine could be ready by the end of this year or early next year.
A vaccine against Covid-19 has been developed and approved for use in Russia, but world experts say that this vaccine, called ‘Sputnik V’, has not been tested enough.
